| Marla Schoolmeester has over 15 years of experience in Friends education at New Garden Friends School in Greensboro, NC as a parent, classroom and committee volunteer, and Trustee. Marla served NGFS in governance roles in finance, development, and long-range planning. She was honored to be one of the inaugural recipients of the NGFS Outstanding Volunteer Award for the 2001-2002 school year. While living in Greensboro, and later Reidsville, Marla and her husband Rick owned and operated service stations. Marla managed the business office, including daily bookkeeping, accounts payable/receivable and employee benefits. In 2002, following the 8th grade graduation of her oldest child from NGFS, the family moved to Columbia, SC. Marla continued her long association with NGFS, returning regularly for committee and board meetings, and school functions. Recently, Marla has been Director of the 3K-6th grade Montessori School of Columbia in Columbia, SC, combining her business experience with her interest in child centered education. |

Michelle Freeman Anderson, Lead Teacher, Grades K-1
Michelle Freeman Anderson is a native of Wilmington, Delaware, and a third-generation educator. She gained early experience with Friends education as an elementary student at Wilmington Friends School.
Michelle has a degree in Dance Pedagogy from Butler University and is currently enrolled in the Masters of Teaching (Elementary Education) Program at Queens University. Following her undergraduate work, Michelle served in Americorps with the Peace Learning Center in Indianapolis, Indiana where she taught conflict resolution and mediation techniques in the Indianapolis Public Schools. She has taught for four years in Charlotte; the last three of which were at Charlotte Country Day School. Of her new role at FSC, Michelle says, "I am drawn to teach at Friends School of Charlotte because of the opportunity to help create a learning community dedicated to simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and service. I look forward to meeting my new students and learning about their unique gifts and interests."
Nancy Lynn, Lead Teacher, Grades 2-3
Nancy Lynn, a native of Washington D.C., comes to the Friends School of Charlotte with over 10 years of educational studies and teaching experience. She is excited to share her innate interest in teaching and children with the FSC community.
For the past three years, Nancy has taught fifth grade students in two public schools - two years at Deale Elementary School in Deale, MD, a suburb of Annapolis, MD, and last year at Dilworth Visual and Performing Arts School in Charlotte. Nancy graduated cum laude from the University of Maryland with a bachelor's degree of science in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Mathematics. In high-school, Nancy participated in a three-year child development program at Prince George's Community College that allowed her to graduate as a senior with 12 Early Childhood Education college credits. She also interned at an elementary school where she worked with special needs and English as a Second Language students. As a student of Thomas G. Pullen Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School for 9 years, Nancy received a well-rounded education that integrated fine arts, dance, music, and theater. Throughout her teaching experience, Nancy has demonstrated a passion in integrating academics, the arts, and technology to allow students to develop into life-long learners who are fueled by their own unique strengths and interests. Nancy is excited to leverage her educational and work experience to enhance the experiences of the students, staff, and parents at FSC.
Barbara Bonner, Music, Grades K-3
Barbara Bonner joined the Friends School of Charlotte in January of 2008. She teaches music twice a week at the school. Barbara holds a Bachelors degree from Converse College in Studio Art. She has been teaching music in preschool, church and elementary school settings for over 10 years. Barbara is a licensed Musikgarten teacher and is also certified in ORFF. She is currently pursuing a degree in Music at UNC-Charlotte
Friends School of Charlotte grew out of the leadings of several members of Charlotte Friends Meeting and is the result of five years of careful study and planning. The School is under the spiritual care of the Meeting. FSC opened in September, 2007 with 7 students in grades K-3. As we grow our student population, we anticipate the 2010-11 enrollment to be between 14 and 20 students in grades TK-1, and 2-3. As we continue to move from our startup phase into our "new school" phase, we are beginning our search for a Part-Time TK-1st grade teacher. Part-Time Teacher (potential for full-time) - OPEN
FSC seeks a part-time teacher that will work in a co-taught TK-1st grade classroom. The required hours for this position are 8:00-12:00 Monday-Friday. This position is open for the 2010-2011 school year, from August 17, 2010 - June 9, 2011.
Duties for this position include: The care and safety of the children; the daily teaching of a small group of students; cultivation of peaceful conflict resolution skills within the student group/school; regular communication with school families and fellow staff members; participation in admissions of new students as necessary; implementation of community involvement projects; attendance at one faculty meeting per week.
Attributes of a successful candidate will include: Education and teaching experience in early elementary education (particularly grades TK-K); commitment to the education of the whole child, including a clear understanding of the social, emotional, and academic development needs of early elementary-aged students; the ability to work collaboratively with the Head of School and F/T Teacher in developing and implementing a curriculum consistent with the School’s values and mission; the ability to work within a culture that expects open communication, consensus-building, collaboration, and the cultivation of supportive, honest and respectful relationships.

Lead Teacher, Lower School - FILLED
FSC seeks a lead teacher responsible for the implementation of the School's Quaker philosophy in the daily life of the classroom and school. The teacher will work with a teaching assistant to develop and implement a meaningful and developmentally appropriate classroom curriculum for up to 15 children. Other duties include:
- Implementing conflict resolution skills for students
- Implementing a service-learning program in the classroom
- Implementing a Quaker education component into the classroom
- Communicating regularly with classroom parents
We are especially interested in teachers who have experience in working on educational teams and who seek the opportunity to help develop a new Friends school. We seek candidates who value helping to create a loving, diverse learning environment. Candidates should have at least 3-5 years of relevant classroom experience, have worked in multi-aged classrooms or settings, and have a minimum of a BA degree.
