Native American Bark house During their Native American unit, the students at FSC built a bark house. They cut down saplings that were overcrowding a forest and then used them to frame their structure. Then the students added "bark" for the walls and glyphs. The unit culminated with a feast featuring Native American recipes made by the students, which they ate in and around their bark house!
Habitat for Humanity Field Trip/Community Service Project. As a community service project, the students visited the Charlotte Habitat for Humanity warehouse. There they learned about Habitat's mission and received a tour of the facility. We brought back a giant bucket of nails to school so we can sort them out for the volunteers to reuse!

Day of the Dead Celebration The students at FSC studied the meaning of the Mexican Day of the Dead Celebration throughout the month of October. The unit culminated in a "Mercado" where students could buy items to place on the altar they made to remember their loved ones.

Making a Difference Field Trip As part of our unit on "Making a Difference," the students visited the Charlotte Friends Meeting to help construct a memorial garden. They also learned about the history of the Bartrams, a Quaker family of botanists that is credited with identifying many native American plants during colonial times. Thanks to their work, we now know which plants are native to areas throughout the east coast. Jeff Meyer, a member of the Charlotte Friends Meeting, explained how we can easily make a difference by planting native species of plants in our yards. Native plants attract native insects, which in turn help support other native wildlife!

Raptor Center Field Trip During our Bird Unit in the early spring, we went to visit the Raptor Center at Latta Plantation. Our students practiced categorizing birds into different groups and were fascinated by the birds of prey. Getting to see and learn about them up close was a real treat!

Grandfriends Day, April 2010 Students invited grandparents and special friends to visit our school for the morning. Grandfriends were invited to join us for our Morning Meeting, a special Choice Time, and Meeting for Worship.
Culminating Habitat for Humanity Field Trip After spending several months sorting nails for the Habitat for Humanity volunteers, the students were able to return to the warehouse to see how they have helped this organization. The warehouse had special bins built to sort all the different nails used by the workers so they can easily come and take what they need each day. Our students enjoyed adding the nails they had sorted to the bins! We were grateful that we had the opportunity to help Habitat continue to provide homes to those in need.
Last Day of School Picnic FSC students, staff, families, board members and volunteers gathered for a potluck lunch on the last day of school. Michelle and Nancy led the students in a group reflection before the meal and after lunch the entire group entered a period of worship. Many messages of gratitude and appreciation were shared. We closed with singing and a period of freeplay and socializing. Happy summer and we'll see you next year!

Student Art Gallery at the Mint Museum of Modern Art The students at FSC were proud to have their artwork displayed at the Mint Museum of Modern Art here in Charlotte, NC during the months of September and October. To read more about their art display click here.

A visit to the Fire Station During our fall study of community, the K/1 class visited the local fire station to learn about the service firemen and women do for our community.

K/1 Vists Habitat for Humanity The K-1 class visits Habitat for Humanity and takes a tour of their Charlotte warehouse. They learned about how Habitat helps our local community by providing homes for those in need. As a year long service project, the K-1 students are sorting nails to help Habitat for Humanity volunteers work more efficiently on their builds.

2-4 Community Presentation The second, third, and fourth graders each built their own model community during their unit on Local Government this fall. They analyzed what needs and wants their citizens would have and used them to create goods and services that would be required in their communities. This project culminated in a presentation of their 3D creation along with extras like their government budget, laws, advertising, and even a narrative story about life in their imaginary city.

2-4 Class Visits the Levine Museum of the New South During their study of North Carolina, students in the 2/3/4 class were able to take a visit back in time by visiting the "From Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers" exhibit at the Levine Museum of the New South in Uptown, Charlotte.

Mad Scientist Visits the K/1 Class During their study of the five senses, the K/1 class recieved a lively visit from a "Mad Scientist" that allowed the students many hands-on experiences using their senses.

WCNC's Larry Sprinkle Visits FSCThe students enjoyed a special visit from Larry Sprinkle on Wednesday, February 2nd, at 2pm. He delivered a very informative and engaging presentation that answered many of the questions our students had about weather. He taught the students what to do in the event of a tornado, told us how many types of extreme weather form, showed us what the terms "high and low pressure" mean, and we even found out that his last name has always been "Sprinkle!" We learned that his interest in the weather began as early as the age of 6, which I hope inspires our students to think about what their interests currently are!

Students Celebrate the 100th Day of School! The 100th day of school is a celebrated math holiday at FSC and as part of our tradition the students are asked to find 100 items to bring to school to share. The students found creative ways to display, group, and count their items!

GrandFriends GatheringGrandparents and other special friends joined in classes and activities during the annual "GrandFriends Gathering" in November.
